Collectively known as tree support systems, Cabling and Bracing are methods of providing supplemental support to trees that for several possible reasons are beginning to lose the battle with gravity.  When used wisely and installed correctly support systems can extend the life of a tree and reduce the risk of it failing. It should be noted that even with added support installed in the tree; these mechanical devices should not be considered a sure way to make a hazardous tree into a safe tree.

The most common reason for installing a cable support system is when we want to limit the movement of limbs that have a weak connection or are becoming too heavy to support themselves alone.  Trees that are a potential threat to property and people or have historic or economic value should be considered for installing a cable support system.

When extra support is needed it is sometimes advisable to install a bracing support system, which consists of one or more strong rigid bracing rods that commonly are used to support a split or weak crotch.   If it is deemed necessary to install bracing rods in a tree, we recommend that cables should be installed too.
